In the past 15 months I have bought 6 of these for our new house. I just finished installing the 6th one. It took about 40 minutes. The original attraction of this fan was the flat white color with the short hang bar, and minimalistic look. They "hug" (relatively speaking) the ceiling, and because our ceilings are flat white they blend in nicely. There are 3 blades but they work great. There are 3 speeds. On low speed they are practically impossible to hear but create a nice low breeze. On the other two speeds it is more the noise of the air being pushed around than the fan itself. 90% of the time the fan is on the first speed setting. Sometimes when coming in from a hot day I might put a fan on speed two or three for a while before turning it down. The remote control is great for a couple of reasons. First, it can go to any of the speeds I want immediately. There is no cycling through. Second, if I cut power at the wall switch, then when I turn the wall switch back on the fan will resume whatever setting it was last at - off, speed one, speed two, or speed three. This way when I leave the TV room I can turn off the wall switch and it stops. When I return to the room I simply turn on the switch. And yes, the fan is quiet enough that I don't have to turn the volume up to hear the TV.The booklet says on speed one the fan is using only 15 watts. This allows us to keep the fan running continuously in the pet area. Overall by using the fans we were able to reduce our electric bill about 35% by setting the thermostats at 75 and running the fans in the rooms we are in instead. It is quite comfortable, even when sleeping.I'm no electrician. The instructions are well developed and easy to follow. There are pictures to follow, with explanations. There are little labels on the wires that say what they are to connect to. The only tools I needed were a wire stripper for the wires coming out of the ceiling, and a screw driver. I also used a cheap volt meter to make sure there is power when the wall switch is turned on, and no power when the wall switch is turned off. What I learned. A) Wire nuts that get twisted over the wire ends are used to connect the fan to the remote control receiver in the fan to the house power. After connecting the wires, when tucking them away in the hood of the unit, I have had 2 wires that popped out of their nuts. It is important to tug on the wires after putting the nut on to make sure they are tight, because otherwise you will need to remove the covers, redo the wires, and put the covers back on (about 5 minutes). B) Ironically, on the first fan I bought something was wrong with the remote control receiver. I called Minka customer service. They walked me through a diagnostic process, determined I needed a new remote control receiver, and sent me one next day air. I installed it and it worked perfectly. They asked me to send the bad receiver back to figure out what went wrong. Needless to say, I was overall impressed as shown by me purchasing 5 more after that. I have not a problem since. My next project is outdoor fans. We plan to stick with Minka except will go with a different style and color.
