Compared to the ratchet stop, the Ratchet Friction Thimble eliminates axial impact, ensuring more stable measuring forces. The larger thimble design is easier to handle, minimizing user-induced errors. These thimbles can be operated with one hand, making them ideal for achieving precise measurement results. Feature of Sleeve and Thimble Read the measurement result by aligning the sleeve scale line with the thimble graduation line. Measuring Force Device The measuring force device is designed to drive the spindle and ensure consistent measuring force on the measuring face, resulting in precise measurement results. Features of Friction Thimble The friction thimble provides consistent measuring force through an improved inner structure. Compared to the ratchet stop, the Friction Thimble eliminates axial impact, ensuring more stable measuring forces. The larger thimble design is easier to handle, minimizing user-induced errors. These thimbles can be operated with one hand, making them ideal for achieving precise measurement results. Features of Ratchet Stop Standard micrometers are equipped with a ratchet stop. Rotate the spindle until the measuring faces of the anvils, workpiece, and spindle are in contact.Rotate the driving cap two or three times using two or three fingers.Read the measurement value. Tips of Using the Micrometers Tips for Zero Setting Before operation, clean the measuring faces of the anvil and spindle with a soft cloth or paper. Carefully bring them together by turning the ratchet stop. If the "0" line on the thimble does not align with the reference line on the sleeve, adjust as follows: Lock the spindle using the locking device.Adjust the sleeve with a spanner until the reference line aligns with the "0" line on the thimble. Sleeve, Thimble Read Measuring Result Read measuring result by scale line in sleeve and graduation line in thimble. Ok, let’s be real. These are not Mitutoyo, Brown and Sharpe, or Starrett, but they are good micrometers! I purchased these for use in the field so I wouldn’t have to worry about them. I am obsessive about my instruments, treating my calipers and mics like a mother with her newborn baby. I needed something that’s accurate, but possibly sacrificial. The micrometers came packaged in a good storage case, individually in sealed plastic bags with a desiccant each, but were kind of loose and were able to slide around some. Now we know that the carriers are not going to treat these like they were Faberge eggs, so I’m assuming that there was some jostling. The 1 – 2” mic had some issues due to being able to slide around some. The thimble lock had been knocked way out of alignment and the only way I could unlock the mic was by removing the lever and re-aligning it, but it works fine now. The spines do not appear to have been damaged either. Also, that same mic had some debris in the thimble threads which may be related to the rough handling. Adjusting the thimble was very rough when turning to the zero (1.0000) graduation. Also, it was way out of calibration (about 10 thou) (see photos). I disassembled the mic, cleaned, lubed, reassembled, calibrated, and all is well now. It measures to within 0.0001 repeatedly. I know, some would say that it should work out of the box, but I like to tinker. I have a good mic now.The other micrometers work flawlessly, and repeatedly measure accurately to within 0.0001. The accompanying standards are also accurate. These were verified against know gauges.Pros:Price!Cons:Could have been packaged a little more securely for shipping.Update: 10/11/24 - I've been using these mics for almost 2 months, and they perform flawlessly. They are repeatable and are very accurate. I've even started using them in the shop over of the Mitutoyo's! These were a good investment! Updated from 4 stars to 5 stars
