I'm halfway through this book and already know it was definitely a worthy purchase. Lots of real knowledge from an experienced soundman with decades of experience in theatrical Hollywood films, documentaries, TV shows, commercials and corporate videos. Detailed and easy to follow explanations illuminate both the technical underpinnings of sound and the practical strategies to achieve good sound for film, with real life examples. The author has improved the text through four editions and has the knack for teaching in a style that's dynamic and full of valuable information, with a bit of humor here and there. This book a must-have for any filmmaker interested in improving the sound quality of his/her productions, and I can see myself going back to it for reference in coming years. My only complaint, which has also been mentioned in other reviews, is that the author sometimes refers to sound files as reference for explanations, files which should be available for download from Jay Rose's own website or the publisher's (Focal Press) in order to follow along with those examples, but both websites no longer exist so those resources are unavailable. Judging from the Amazon listing I thought these would be included with the book itself on a CD, but no. Considering the high price tags of a book meant for a professional audience, Focal Press really owes it to buyers to keep those resources available, it really shouldn't be that complicated... Still, the book is so good that even that shortcoming doesn't take too much away from it, at least for me. Delivery was faster than expected (even with shipping from the US to Mexico), and the book arrived shrink-wrapped and in new condition. Highly recommended!
